Introduction

Maryland in southern United States is a leading center of life sciences and biotechnological research. About 350 companies belonging to this sector have their base in Maryland. With an area of 2,406.68 square miles and a 2010 census population of 5,773,552, it is the eighth smallest state of the country. Baltimore and Washington DC are the two major cities which along with their suburbs account for the majority of the population of the state. As far as beauty services are concerned Maryland is no New York or California. But there exists reasonably good demand for various beauty services as indicated by the many salons and spas spread across the state, but more concentrated in the two major cities.

Licensure requirements

Before looking at the nail technician schools in Maryland, let’s discuss the licensure requirements for nail technicians in Maryland. Maryland state law requires that you obtain a license to practise as a nail technician in the state. The license is issued by the Maryland State Board of Cosmetologists on satisfying the requirements and passing an examination. The requirements to be satisfied by the applicant for a nail technician license are:

- At least 17 years of age
- Minimum qualification ninth grade or GED
- Proof of completion of at least 250 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 8 months as a registered apprentice with at least 30 hours per week in a licensed salon.

For those who want to take the apprentice route, they need to submit an application and sponsorship form signed by a senior cosmetologist or a licensed nail technician with two years experience. This license is issued for one year.

The nail technician license is issued for a period of two years after which it needs to be renewed. There are no continuing education requirements for license renewal.
